The wine country of Commonwealth Virginia has flown under the radar, but not anymore. Virginia wines are being lauded alongside their competitors from California and France. But it’s not just the pinots and chardonnays that are worth a stop—Virginia is for lovers and that’s definitely the case in wine country. The Williamsburg Winery on Wessex Hundred is the perfect cozy holiday getaway for you and your special someone. Their Romantic Colonial Holiday Hotel Package may only be a one-night excursion, but it will leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed and full of holiday spirit.

It all starts with a room at Wedmore Place, the Williamsburg Winery’s inn, with all the charm of a European country estate, but the luxury of a modern boutique hotel. After you drop your bags (and maybe take a moment to recover from your travels on the cloud-like king-sized bed) stop for a quick lunch on the 300-acre property at the Gabriel Archer Tavern (lunch not included in the package). There’s plenty of wine on the horizon and the tavern has plenty of hearty options to help get you ready like their Border Springs Farm lamb sliders or Edwards Virginia lamb ham caesar. And of course, no meal down here would be complete without a few local oysters.

After lunch, head into town to take advantage of Williamsburg’s outdoor ice skating rink at Liberty’s Ice Pavilion. The holiday package comes with two passes, including skate rental, to take a few turns around the rink in the heart of downtown. And Liberty’s Ice Pavilion is one of the few outdoor rinks this far south that uses real, frozen water instead of imitation plastic ice, so you can zip around even faster.

After you’ve had your fill of skating, stroll over to the Williamsburg Winery’s new tasting room in Merchant Square next door to the rink and warm up with a couple of complimentary glasses of spiced wine and, if you’re in the mood, a flight of local hard ciders. Stick around and do a little holiday shopping or take some time to enjoy Colonial Williamsburg’s holiday decor—you can add day passes to the package at a 10 percent discount—until it’s time to head back to the winery.

Back at Wessex Hundred, take some time in the tasting room before dinner with a tour and reserve flight of the winery’s best bottles, including their Bordeaux blend Gabriel Archer Reserve, which is a multi-year medal winner at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and Decanter World Wine Awards.

Dinner is one of the highlights of any stay at Williamsburg Winery as Chef David McClure takes advantage of all of the area’s best ingredients on his menu at Café Provençal. Border Spring Farm lamb tartare with a sour cherry mostarda and halibut poached in local honey are just a few of the menu’s creative takes on bistro classics.

Finally, it’s time to hope for a chill in the air as you head back to your room because every room at Wedmore Place includes a fireplace. The inn only allows fires when the temperature drops below 50 degrees, but with average lows dipping into the 40s and even 30s as the holidays approach, you should have an opportunity to curl up in front of the fireplace with one final glass.

The holidays are a busy time and it’s easy to run out of time to actually relax and enjoy yourself. But with the  Williamsburg Winery’s romantic holiday getaway, you can get in an entire vacation while sneaking away for just one day.
